Reimagine the Railroad
Reconnect Our Neighborhoods. Rethink Urban Rail.
🚧 Why Now? The Union Pacific line has divided San Antonio neighborhoods for over 140 years. It’s time to rethink how freight and urban life can coexist safely, sustainably, and equitably.
📉 The Problem
Freight rail running through urban neighborhoods such as Beacon Hill and Alta Vista
Noise, vibration, and air pollution from diesel locomotives
Transport of hazardous materials with the risk of derailment
Unsafe pedestrian crossings
Physical barrier between our communities
🚀 The Opportunity
Use state and federal funding to relocate freight lines
Repurpose land into a greenway park for community use
Promote safety, health, and local vibrancy
💬 Take Action
Texas already has a Rail Relocation Fund—we’re asking our legislators to activate it and put it to use.
We’re also asking TxDOT to launch a feasibility study to explore moving the line.
Write to your State Legislators and TxDOT. Use our template to make your voice heard.
The possibilities are endless! A transformed rail corridor could become a lush, green linear park that invites walking, cycling, and community gatherings. It could include art installations, local markets, and recreational areas flourishing on a reclaimed urban artery—promoting health, sustainability, and community unity. By repurposing this corridor, we can eliminate the risks and failures of inner city rail while offering immense social, economic, and environmental benefits to Beacon Hill, Alta Vista, and beyond. The future is up to us! Demand Change Now!!
